Can I Become a Tax Professional?

Many people ask us “who” can become a tax professional? Andy Frye, the founder of Pronto Tax School, created this short video to answer this question. You can watch the video, or read the transcript of the video below. Andy discusses how almost anyone can become a tax preparer and tax professional.

Andy Frye (E.A.)- President of Pronto Tax School and Enrolled Agent

Andy Frye: So I know when we think of a tax professional, a lot of us that aren’t in the tax industry might be thinking, ‘Wow, that person must have gone to so much schooling, they must have so many fancy degrees.’ So if I’m a stay-at-home mom, or work-at-home mom as I like to call them, if I’m a student, if I’m currently a lifeguard at the YMCA, if I’m working a fast food job, whatever it might be, could I become a tax professional? Is that even in the realm of possibility? And so the answer is actually yes, and that surprises a lot of people.

The reality is that if you are age 18 and you are a US citizen, you have just as much ability to become a tax professional as anybody else out there, and you can actually get the same credential, the same registration that somebody that works at one of the major tax companies has. Okay, and so that’s something that a lot of people do not know. You can become a tax professional from wherever you are in life, whatever your current job is, and a lot of our best members actually keep their current job, they become a tax professional, build their business on the side, and then when the time is right, they go ahead and retire that other job and go full-time as a tax professional. And even I should point out if you’re not a US citizen, there are some different ways that even you could possibly become a tax professional, but that goes a little beyond the scope of this video, but just do keep that in mind.

This is one of the most ironic things about the tax industry, is that so many of us get into the tax industry in order to facilitate doing something else. So for example, let’s say that you are a parent with young kids and you just don’t want to miss those moments with your kids, you want to be there at those recitals or games or whatever it might be, right?

You might get in the tax industry because you know that this business offers that flexibility for you to do that. Maybe you’re caring for an elderly parent or an elderly relative, maybe you like to play golf, right, or you have a hobby that you’re passionate about, and so the tax industry is one of the last businesses where you have an extreme amount of flexibility. Now I should say, in order to accommodate that flexibility, or really to make that flexibility possible, you have to get really good at a couple of things.

  • You have to get really good at communication, so you have to be able to communicate to clients, to your employer, effectively about the flexibility that you need, and be able to maintain that communication with both your potential employer as well as your clients to make sure that your flexibility doesn’t mess up other people.
  • And secondly, on that point, you have to get good at meeting deadlines.

So if you are having your flexibility and your desire to do whatever you want to do in your life, that’s causing people to miss tax deadlines and get penalties and interests and all those kinds of things, that’s a big no-no. And so like everything in life, if we want something, if we want that flexibility, we have a certain price to pay. So really practice on your communication, both with clients and with your employers if you have one, and then secondly, be able to perform and meet those deadlines. So if you can pay those two prices, you can have that flexibility in the tax industry. It still is one of the best industries in the entire world if you want flexibility in your schedule and in your life.” [end]
