What are Some Business Activities That Fit Well with Tax Preparation?
By Tim Frye
Tax preparation is a business in which the doors are not always open year round. The tax season is very short, and can leave you watching your money dwindling month by month afterwards. It helps if you can supplemental your tax income with another profession throughout the rest of the year, so you can stay afloat and not fall into a deep depression. This article will discuss some of the business activities that fit well with the trade of tax preparation.
Become a Traveling Notary
Every off season is different in the tax game, depending on how your tax year went. If you finished with heavy pockets on April 15th when the clock struck midnight, you may not need a side gig for the whole rest of the year. That preparer, you can kick back and have autonomy with that capital. On the other hand, if you are like me, you still need money the other eight months of the year. So finding a supplemental line of work that coordinates with tax season would be a smart choice. Ideally you want to get into a profession that fits into the tax season format, and it helps more if the gig is related with tax preparation. A perfect example of this is the traveling notary. You can bill each day in and out of the office if you become a notary republic, a service that is much needed. And if you travel to notarize items such as loan documents or real estate contracts you are not held to the ten dollars per signature limit. This profession provides valuable supplemental income for the tax preparer that has little to do in the off season. Being a notary is something a year round tax preparer should definitely consider.
Become an Insurance Agent
If you want to link two other careers together you could become an insurance agent. You could offer both of these services at your office year round and make a decent living for yourself. You’ll succeed only with persistence of course. Insurance is similar to taxes in that it is part of the modern day environment where checks and balances are required by the government, people are going to be required to have insurance by 2014. This is similar to when they are required to do taxes if their income lies beyond designated thresholds. The con of bringing these two services together is that sometimes it can be a bit of a quagmire when you are selling insurance and doing taxes out of the same space.
Become a Real Estate Agent
When you are doing taxes, and are trying to find a career that offers a similar level of autonomy, look into becoming a real estate agent. Real estate agents essentially work when they want, so you will able to do fewer real estate deals during the tax season and more when it’s finished. Real estate is without a doubt a tough racket and only for those with a heightened amount of intestinal fortitude. These days the market is improving leaving those who have heart to have a chance to supplement tax preparation income with a few deals. You got 8 months of cold calling to do. Good luck.
