Upcoming Tax Pro “Compliance” Deadlines

Tax Professional Deadlines for Compliance

We won’t blame you (and we hope you won’t blame us!) if we all take a bit of time to “get away” from the Tax Business Grind during this Holiday Season, and do some serious RELAXING.

HOWEVER, let’s all make sure that any time we take away from The Grind doesn’t result in us losing our licenses, registration, and other things we need.

Each and every year, we see an unfortunately large number of tax professionals forget to do the “compliance stuff” to keep our credentials in good standing, which then causes BIG problems once tax season starts.

“Compliance stuff” such as:

  • Completing our continuing education
  • Renewing our registration with any applicable regulatory agencies
  • Renewing our PTIN

We want to help tax pros NOT be “that guy” (or that lady!) who wakes up sometime in January of 2024 and realizes with horror that…you are no longer a licensed (registered) tax professional…and you are no longer “street legal” to do taxes professionally.

Here then are a few quick reminders about upcoming compliance deadlines:

  • December 31, 2023 – Deadline for tax preparers to complete the Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP) course, including the Annual Federal Tax Refresher (AFTR) exam. Click here for the Pronto Solution for AFSP / AFTR.
  • December 31, 2023 – Deadline for California (CTEC) tax preparers who want to obtain the AFSP designation for 2024. Click here for the Pronto Solution for CTEC / AFSP.
  • December 31, 2023 – Deadline for Enrolled Agents to complete your required continuing education. Minimum 72 credit hours every three years, with at least 16 hours per year, and at least 2 of those hours being Ethics. Click here for the Pronto Solution for EA continuing education. ATTENTION: IRS is actually monitoring EA hours now (in the past they were very lax–not anymore).
  • January 15, 2024 – “Final” deadline for California (CTEC) tax preparers to complete your 20 Hour CTEC Course and renew your registration with CTEC. If you don’t renew by this date, you have to “start from zero” as a new tax preparer, including undergoing fingerprinting and background check. Click here for the Pronto Solution for CTEC renewal.

REMINDER: in most cases, completing our continuing education is only ONE of the things we need to do to keep our professional credentials in good standing. Make sure to follow the directions we put at the end of each course to make sure you complete the entire process. For example, some people complete their course, but then don’t properly register with their agency–which then messes everything up.

We humbly, yet firmly recommend that if you have not already completed all your “compliance stuff,” schedule some time to get that done ASAP.
