That time of year again…the time for renewal of your IRS PTIN. All 2023 PTIN’s will expire on December 31st, 2023.
“Anyone who prepares or helps prepare a federal tax return or a claim for refund for compensation must have a valid PTIN from the IRS. They also need to include the PTIN as their identifying number on any return or claim for refund filed with the IRS. PTINs expire on December 31 of the calendar year for which they are issued. All 2023 PTINs will expire on Dec. 31, 2023.” (IRS-2023-197)
The renewal fee your 2024 PTIN is $19.75
How to Renew Your PTIN Online:
- Go to IRS gov/taxpros
- Click on the “Renew or Register” button
- Click on “Log in” and enter your username and password
- Click on “Renew My PTIN button on the Main Menu
Within your account you can check on your continuing education standings, summary of your filed returns for the current year, check secure email from IRS Return Preparer Office, and track your participation in the Annual Filing Season Program (AFSP ).
How to Apply For an Initial PTIN Online:
- Go to IRS gov/taxpros
- Click on the “Renew or Register” button
- Click on “Create an Account” and follow the instructions to set up your new account with a temporary password.
- Once you receive your temporary password, log in to your new account and follow the instructions to access the PTIN system.
- Click on “Register for a PTIN” button from the main menu

This is also a great time to remind you that December 31st is the deadline for not only the AFSP continuing education annual requirements, but also for Enrolled Agents and CPA/CPE CE’s (check your state’s requirements).
