How to Raise Prices for Business Tax Clients

Business Tax Training Course

All the Tax Industry Gurus agree:

You gotta raise prices for all your business tax clients!

  • NOW!
  • BIG!
  • OR ELSE!

But would raising prices on your business tax clients really work for you, or is this just a lot of “hot air” ejected from the mouths of people who don’t really do, in real life, what they tell everyone else we need to do?

It Is Your Decision. Own It!

I don’t feel qualified to tell you what to do in this area.

  • Yes, market rates for expert-level business tax preparation & consulting have gone way up, and yes, many tax pros are charging way under market rates.
  • However, I understand and respect that every tax pro is different and unique.
  • There are multiple ways to do this business that can work for you depending on what your goals are, who your clients are, and so forth and so on.

I have even learned–and come to accept–that some tax pros want to charge under market rates.  That’s what some tax pros choose to do.  And they have their reasons, such as:

  • We feel sorry for business clients who may be struggling financially.
  • We can’t tolerate the inter-personal conflict that sometimes results from raising prices.
  • We want to do the work for below market rates because we feel we are “just learning.”

Without saying any of these reasons are “right” or “wrong,” we can just examine the reasons why we charge the prices we charge as of now–and this “awareness exercise” often sheds light on what should be our next move…

How to Communicate a Price Increase in a Positive Way

Now then, if you decide that you are going to raise prices for your business tax clients, I do feel qualified to give you an easier, more profitable, and more fun way to do it.

  • I feel qualified only because I’ve done it myself, in real life, with real clients.
  • I went from charging an average of $400 for S corporation tax prep (in 2015) to an average of $2,200 for S corporation tax prep (in 2023)–with the same clients.
  • Why would clients not only be “OK with” drastic price increases like that, but actually be happy with the much higher prices they paid in 2023?

I believe, based on my experience and what I see among our best-performing Pronto Tax School Members, that success with raising prices starts with communication.

That’s why I want to give you something that might make communication regarding price increases faster, easier, more profitable, and more fun:

Needless to say, we must ALWAYS back up any price we charge with high quality service that’s actually worth it.

We find, in fact, that increasing prices often leads to better service for the client because the tax professional feels more motivation to justify the higher price. Win-win!
