How to Feel Ready for “Intense” Business Tax Client Interactions

Business Tax Training Course

Are you feeling ready for the business tax rush?

With the March 15 deadline for S corporations and partnerships rapidly approaching, the Rush is most definitely starting now and will intensify quickly.

I try not to call other human beings “savages.” It just doesn’t seem like something I should be doing.

However, we all know that business tax clients can present to tax professionals a level of intensity and/or outright aggression that can be a bit jarring at times. Business tax clients often feel an immense amount of stress and fear during the tax preparation process. And sometimes (often) that can result in a certain “unloading” on the tax professional who may find ourselves in the position of pleading, “Don’t shoot the messenger.”

We definitely don’t want to head into these intense interactions feeling unprepared and not confident.

On the upside, when we are prepared and confident, the profitability of business tax clients is outstanding, and there is amazing potential to make such a positive difference in the lives of our clients and our communities.

The Only Way I Feel Ready for More Advanced Business Tax Clients

The main and, ultimately, the only way my own tax team and I feel ready for intense interactions with business tax clients is to know that we have experienced tax professionals ready to help us with anything we need as we help our business clients.

No amount of training can ever substitute for having people who are smarter than me, or smart in a different way, and I can reach out to these people when I need help.

  • As the saying goes, “I may not know everything, but I know somebody who knows.”
  • As the other saying goes, “Your network is your net worth.”

Every tax professional who seeks to serve more advanced business tax clients at an elite level should find a way to find and to keep:

  • At least one trusted mentor who truly wants the best for you.
  • At least one group of your peers who are walking the same path as you are.

If you ask me, these are total “non-negotiables” if you plan to serve more advanced business tax clients–absolute must haves and by far the best way to feel and actually be ready for intense interactions with business tax clients.

How to Find and Keep a Business Tax Mentor and Peer Group

A couple easy / free ways to find mentors and peer groups:

  • Join and participate in groups on Facebook, LinkedIn, or X.
  • Direct message someone within the group and seek to develop a mentor / mentee relationship.

Now let’s be honest: these methods can be “hit or miss” and definitely require some time and effort on your part.

We (usually) “pay” for easy / free methods by 1) possibly not getting the desired results, and 2) having to put in a lot of time and effort to get the desired results.

We have to understand, going into this, that true business tax experts are ridiculously busy, and our time typically goes towards “revenue-producing activities.” We are not exactly sitting around waiting for phone calls from people who don’t pay us money and are, if we really think about it, our competitors in the marketplace.

Tax pros who discover these realities may then wonder:

  • Maybe I should hire a business coach?
  • Maybe investing in my professional network will increase my net worth?
  • Maybe I will benefit from focusing my efforts on making money, rather than “saving money” by always looking for “free stuff”?

For tax professionals who have entered that “head space,” please consider this blog post our job application!
