How Much Does It Cost to Renew Your CTEC Registration

California tax preparers must renew their registration with the California Tax Education Council (CTEC) each year. Tax preparers in California who are not registered with CTEC cannot legally prepare tax returns for pay in the State of California and may become subject to fines of up to $5,000 per incident if their CTEC registration expires and is not renewed. CTEC requires two things as a condition of renewing your CTEC registration: you must 1) complete a 20 hour CTEC-approved continuing education tax course and 2) pay a renewal fee to CTEC.

In this blog post, we will tell you exactly how much it costs to renew your CTEC registration and give you a helpful tip to save money on CTEC renewal costs.

Before you will be able to renew your CTEC registration, as noted, you must complete a 20 hour continuing education tax course from a CTEC-approved education provider. Here at, we have an online self-paced tax course that costs $37.

So that is your first cost associated with renewing your CTEC registration is your online 20 hour tax course.

Once you’ve completed your 20 hours, you go onto and click the “Preparer Registration and Personal Account” button.

You will then be prompted to enter your last name and the last six digits of your Social Security number.

Follow directions from and you will be ready to renew with CTEC in no time; to their credit, CTEC makes the whole renewal process fairly simple and easy.

Towards the end of the registration process, you will need to pay a $25 fee to CTEC to complete your CTEC renewal.

The total cost of renewing your CTEC registration, then, would be $37 + $25 = $62.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you renew your CTEC registration late–meaning after October 31st–CTEC will require you to pay a $55 late fee. Last year, this late fee was only $15, so the jump to $55 is pretty steep and can really add to the cost of renewing your CTEC registration; renewing on time versus renewing late is the different between paying $25 CTEC fee versus paying $80 CTEC fee. Not sure about you, but we are tax preparers too, and we’d much rather pay $25 than $80!

The online tax course gives you fast way to beat the CTEC deadline of October 31st and save yourself $55.

We work all the way up until midnight of October 31st to make sure that every tax preparer who passes our course before midnight on October 31st will be able to renew CTEC registration on time and avoid the $55 late fee.

Get started with your 20 hour CTEC course now and beat the October 31st deadline to save yourself $55 on the cost of CTEC renewal.
