Free Income Tax Courses Aren’t Free
If you’re looking to become a tax preparer and don’t have much money to invest, it is only natural to search for free income tax courses. However, it’s important to realize that most income tax classes being advertised as free are, well, not free.
Liberty Tax Service® is the biggest purveyor of free income tax course bait-and-switch. This whole year, they have been advertising their Liberty Tax School as “free” but with a “minimal charge for books.” The minimal charge is around $200. Do you consider that a minimal charge? We don’t.
Not when you can buy entertaining tax education from Pronto Tax School for the same or better prices.
Another unfortunate habit that Liberty Tax School® has adopted is posting their tax course on job boards as if the course is a job, when in reality it’s a course.
In this economic environment, it doesn’t seem right to advertise a job unless you really do have a job to offer.
This is not meant to pick on or attack Liberty Tax Service in any way. Other tax courses advertise in the same misleading way.
Just mentioning these facts so that people who want to become tax preparers can realize that not everything that is said to be free is actually free … and of those things that are actually free, in many of those instances you are getting what you pay for: that is, nothing.
